MC Lyte Launches Hip Hop Sisters Legends Performance Series with Yo-Yo, Lady of Rage, Monie Love, Smooth & Lil Mama, Announces Search for the Next Top Female MC, and Expands Her Enterprise with COO Lynn Richardson
Los Angeles (January 7, 2013) – 27 year entertainment icon and legendary lyricist MC Lyte, together with Sunni Gyrl’s newly appointed EVP/COO Lynn Richardson, launched the long anticipated and historic Hip Hop Sisters Legends performance series with Yo Yo, Monie Love, Lady of Rage, MC Smooth and Lil Mama in Los Angeles, CA. The series commenced with auditions for the Next Top Female MC, continued with a real talk panel discussion: Who Are They, Where Are They, What Happened & Why, and culminated with a heart stopping performance by the legends and announcement of the Next Top Female MC, up and coming lyricist Intelligenz (www.hiphopsisters.info). This historic launch came on the heels of MC Lyte’s announcement of not one, but two $100,000 First Wave scholarship winners (www.hiphopsisters.org/news) at the 2012 Soul Train Music Awards Red Carpet Pre-show. An invitation only reception will take place during the 2013 Grammy week in Los Angeles with celebrities and partners to celebrate these historic accomplishments.
“For years I’ve dreamed of having the ability to expand the influence of female emcees and now that time has arrived,” said MC Lyte. “My company, Sunni Gyrl, has been in existence for over fifteen years and together with my charity, Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, I am committed to giving back and to aggressively expanding opportunities for female emcees and for existing and up and coming celebrities and entertainers who wish to leverage my diversity, success, and leadership in the entertainment industry.”
Yo Yo, longtime friend, legendary lyricist in her own right, and CEO of Fearless Entertainment and Yo Yo School of Hip Hop, says, “Working with Lyte is a no brainer; she is honest, kind, innovative and visionary. She wants for others what she has achieved for herself and I am with her every step of the way in accomplishing this mission to empower female emcees and young people all over the globe.” Yo Yo, of course, wowed the crowd during the series of events with her classic hits and words of wisdom to the up and coming artists.
Lady of Rage dominated the stage with her powerful performance and mystic swag, Monie Love exceeded the crowd’s expectations with her lyrical magic and linguistic uniqueness, Smooth made a strong comeback with her classic “You Been Played,” and Lil Mama electrified the audience with a heart stopping lyrical solo delivered “a capella” that captivated the crowd and cemented her role as a fixture with her legendary big sister emcees. All of this came after the crowd chose the Next Top Female MC, lyricist Intelligenz, who seized the title amidst the fierce competition of dozens of competitors.
“Seeing these women come together to share their gifts with the world and expand their legacy into the next generation of hip hop culture is not only personally gratifying for me, but a long awaited experience for millions who grew up listening to and appreciating hip hop,” says Lynn Richardson, an author, celebrity financial coach and former Fortune 100 corporate Vice President who also serves as President of the Board of Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, and Chief of Operations for Russell Simmons’ and Dr. Benjamin Chavis’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network.

About First Wave:
The First Wave Spoken Word and Hip Hop Arts Learning Community is a unit within the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement. It is a cutting-edge multicultural artistic program for incoming students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bringing together young artists and leaders from across the United States and beyond, the First Wave Learning Community offers students the opportunity to live, study and create together in a close-knit, dynamic campus community. Operating under the Office of the Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer and administered by the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI), the First Wave Learning Community is the first university program in the nation centered on spoken word and hip-hop culture. The inaugural First Wave cohort of 15 students began their UW-Madison career in the Fall 2007 Semester and currently there are 65 spoken word and hip-hop artists on full-tuition scholarship in the First Wave Program. We are currently looking for the next group of motivated students to join the First Wave Learning Community’s 7th Cohort in 2013.
